Saw Filing Kits

No doubt if you are a visitor to this site you have several saws in your shop or home. Even more likely is the fact that they probably need sharpened. You want to learn, but you don't want to practice for the first time on the saw that your Grandfather passed down to you or on the $300 crisp D12 you just bought at the tool meet.

If you can relate to the above, then this page is for you. Here you will find just what you need to learn to file. By popular demand, below are two grades of saws. We offer the premium grade, which once cleaned and sharpened will result in a saw of at least good condition, some better. Saws are usually from big name makers, handles with no or little damage, blades which may have light rust but are cleanable. The idea is that when finished you have a saw that you can use in your saw till, not just a saw to practice on and throw away. In general, we have tried to give an accurate description of each saw so you can make and informed decision.

Also available are what we call standard grade. These saws may

 

have handles with more damage to include shortened horns, drilled hang holes and stress cracks. They can also have narrower blades which may be rusty and even mildly pitted. Having said all that, none are to the point that they cannot be perfectly functional tools once they are cleaned, set and sharpened. In general, these saws are perfect for what they are intended for, learning to file saw teeth. They can also, in fact, be used to cut wood, but may not look as good as their premium counterparts. Both will work great assuming you have filed them properly.

Since many filers are concerned with the height of the blade, we indicate our thoughts on whether the teeth on a saw are ready to file, or could be filed with a little work. In extreme cases, a saw can be recut. In general, up to 1/4" of blade height is sacrificed when you retooth a saw. Having said that, any saw below can be cut to any tooth pitch or configuration.

When you fill out the order form, specify if you want to learn to file rip teeth or crosscut teeth. Rip saws can be had from 4-7 ppi and cross cut saws from 6-13 ppi. You specify the pitch and profile and we'll cut new teeth into the saw you select. We'll also enclose the proper Grobet file and matching handle. Don't forget to also order a 10" mill for jointing or spare files for other saws you might need to sharpen. Learning to file has never been so cheap and stress free. Order yours today.

Note: In general, any saw can function as either a rip or cross cut. However, Rip saws tend to work better if the blade is wider. If you are not sure or have a question on any saw below, please drop me a note through the form located on the FAQ page.

  K1 This massive 1885 era #7 rip saw is 28" long and 7 1/2" high at heel. Currently a 4.5 point, this saw needs retoothed and can be any configuration. Handle has a slight check at main medallion and shortened upper horn. $85  
         
  K2 1900 era Disston #7 is 26" long and 7 1/4" high at heel. Currently a 9 point cross cut, the teeth will need to be recut. Handle has small chip off upper horn. Blade bright and shiny ...little cleanup required on this one. $85  
         
  K3 1940 era Disston K6 Challenger is 26" long and 6" high at heel. Currently a 10 point cross cut, teeth are ready to file as is. Saw is very clean with a small ding on the upper horn as the only apology. $85  
         
  K4 1940 era Disston K6 Challenger is 26" long and 6 1/4" high at heel. Currently an 8 point cross cut, teeth will need to be recut. Saw is very clean with very nice handle...this saw is ready to go once filed with a minimum of cleaning. $85  
         
  K5 1942 era Disston D7 lightweight is 26" long and 6 1/4" high at heel. Currently a 7 point cross cut, teeth are ready to be filed. Saw is in great condition with just some minor finish loss on the handle. These coarse tooth cross cuts are great for blasting through framing lumber. A great project saw. $85  
         
  K6 1940 era Disston D7 lightweight is 26" long and 6 1/4" high at heel. Currently an 11 point cross cut, teeth need to be recut. Saw is in nice condition with just some minor wear on the handle and a very small chip off the upper horn. Blade will clean to bright. $85

  K8 1900 era Disston #16 is 26" long and 6 1/2" high at heel. Currently an 8 point cross cut, the teeth will need to be recut. Handle has minor wear but overall saw will clean to good+ condition. A nice early saw ready to go back to work. $85  
         
  K9 1890 era Richardson Brothers panel saw is 24" long and 6 1/2" high at heel. Currently a 10 point cross cut, this saw is ready to file and go to work. Just a light cleaning required...saw will be a great user when filed. Handle is early and nice! $85  
         
  K10 1900 era Simonds Model 371 is 24" long and 5 1/2" high at heel. Currently a 10 point cross cut, teeth are in good shape and ready to be filed. A cute little saw which will be a nice user once filed. Handle very nice just needs a good cleaning. $85  
         
  K11 1947 era D23 is 26" long and 6 1/4" high at heel. Currently an 8 point cross cut, teeth could be evened out, or if you are a first time filer, should be recut. Handle nice, blade has very light rust which will easily clean. Will make an all around great user. $85  
         
  K12 1930 era Atkins model 53 is 26" long and 6 1/4" high at heel. Currently a 10 point cross cut, teeth are ready to be filed. Handle very nice, blade mostly bright. Will require a minimum of clean up. $85  
         
  K13 1940 era Disston D7 is 26" long and 6 3/8" high at the heel. Currently a 5 1/2 point rip saw, this saw can quickly be returned to work with a good jointing and touch up. Handle nice (if your name is Wayne Brown, you are all set) and blade will easily clean. A handy rip to have for general use. $85  
         
  K14 1900 era Disston D8 is 26" long and 7" high at heel. Currently an 8 point cross cut, teeth could be recut or filed if you are skilled. Blade is mostly bright, handle has minor wear and may have had a coat of shellac applied at some point. Will clean to be a great saw with a nice wide blade. $85  
         
  K15 1900 era Disston #7 is 26" long and 7 1/4" high at heel. Currently a 7 point rip, this saw is ready to go after a quick jointing and filing. Blade will clean to bright, and handle is very nice with the exception of a slightly shortened upper horn. A nice, early, full blade rip. $85  
         
  K16 1900 era Disston #16 is 26" long and 7 1/8" high at heel. Currently a 6 point rip, blade is ready to be filed. Blade will clean and handle is in good shape except the back part of the upper horn is missing. Won't affect use and will make a great user. $85  
         
  K17 1900 era D100 is 26" long and 6" high at heel. Currently a 9 point cross cut, this saw is ready to be filed and go to work. Handle nice, blade dirty but mostly shiny under the grime. Will make a great saw for curved cuts. Relatively scarce model. $85  
         
  K18 1950 era Disston D8 is 26" long and 7" high at heel. Currently an 11 point cross cut, this saw is ready to be filed and go to work. Essentially an unused saw that sat around and got dirty and dull. Handle is nice with very minor wear, blade will clean to bright. $85  
         
  K19 1942 war era Disston D8 panel saw is 24" long and 6" high at heel. Currently an 8 point cross cut, teeth need jointed and filed. Blade mostly bright, handle has moderate wear but no major issues. A handy size to have around the shop. $85  
         
  K20 1942 war era Disston D42 is 26" long and 6 1/4" high at heel. Currently an 8 point cross cut, teeth need jointed and filed. Blade mostly bright, handle has minor wear. This is a premium upgrade to the D23 with tropical hardwood handle and Victory etch. Own a piece of history. $85  
         
  K21 1942 war era Disston D8 is 26" long and 6 3/4" high at heel. Currently an 8 point cross cut, teeth need jointed and filed or can be recut to your preference. Blade will clean to bright, handle has minor wear. Made during the war years when the handles were stained beech and nuts were of steel. $85  
         
  K22 1947 era D23 is 26" long and 6 3/8" high at heel. Currently an 8 point cross cut, teeth could be evened out, or if you are a first time filer, should be recut. Handle nice with minor wear, blade has very light rust which will easily clean. Will make an all around great user. $85  
         
  K23 1900 era D100 is 26" long and 7 1/8" high at heel. Currently a 10 point cross cut which is ready to file. Blade is clean with nice patina and clear etch, handle is dirty with paint patches but no major issues. A very nice saw with a wide blade, a premium upgrade to the D8. Ready to go back to work with your TLC. $85  
         
  K24 1920 era George Bishop model #8 is 28" long with 7 1/2" high blade. Currently a 5 point rip, teeth need jointed and filed. Saw is clean and ready to go to work with a minimum of fuss. Handle has an oversized grip for those with big hands. With a deep blade, this saw is ready to do some serious ripping. $85  
         
  K25 1900 era George Bishop saw is 26" long with 7 1/2" high blade. Currently a 6 point cross cut, blade should be recut, but it could escape retoothing if you are a skilled filer. Saw is clean and ready to go to work. Handle nice but missing a sliver off of back of lower horn. These coarse tooth cross cuts are a joy to use. $85  
         
  K26 1900 era unmarked rip saw is 26" long and 7 1/4" high at heel. Currently a 6 point rip, this saw is ready to file after a quick jointing. Saw is clean and handle is in good shape with a very graceful upper horn that has escaped damage for over 100 years. $85  
         
  K27 1910 era unknown model Simonds is 26" long and 6 1/4" high at heel. Currently a 9 point cross cut, this saw is ready to file. Handle has moderate wear but otherwise in good shape. Will make a nice user. $85  
         
  K28 1900 era Disston D8 is 26" long and 7" high at heel. Currently an 8 point cross cut, this saw can be refiled as is or recut to your preference as teeth are only slightly uneven. Blade clean with dark patina and visible etch with that has only a minor chip from upper horn. This will clean to be a great looking saw with many years of use ahead. $85  
         
  K29 1890 era unmarked saw is 26" long and 7 1/4" high at heel. Currently an 8 point cross cut, this saw will need recut as several teeth are broken off. When I see this it usually means the saw has exceptionally hard steel which was not properly set. My hardness tester indicates the steel in this saw is 52C which is at the top end of what is typical. Will hold an edge a long time once reworked. $85  
         
  K30 1900 era Disston D8 is 28" long and 7 1/2" high at heel. Currently a 6 point rip, this saw is ready to be filed after a quick jointing. This saw is in nice shape with clean blade complete with etch. Only drawback is a shortened upper horn due to a drop to the floor. After some rounding, this saw will make a great user. It's near full width blade and otherwise great condition lands it in the premium category. $85  
         
  K31 1920 era Disston D8 is 26" long and 7" high at heel. This saw needs recut as there is a slight belly in the blade, would make a great rip as a 6 or 7 point. Blade clean and mostly bright with damage free handle. Will make a nice little saw once sharp and cleaned. $85  
         
  K32 1900 era Disston D8 is 26" long and 7" high at heel. Currently a 9 point cross cut, this saw is ready to file. Blade and handle need cleaned, handle does have wear to upper horn but won't affect use (looks like a rat has been chewing on it). Will make a nice user. $85  
         
  K33 1890 era Disston D8 is 26" long and 6 3/4" high at heel. Blade needs recut due to terrible misfiling and would be great in an 11 or 12 point cross cut as a finish saw. Blade has deep patina which will require some scrubbing to clean off, but the etch is bold under the crud. The redeeming feature is the graceful handle with full upper horn. Hard to image how this saw has escaped handle damage when you look at the rest of it. A diamond in the rough but worth the effort. $85  
         
  K34 1910 era Disston D8 is 26" long and 7" high at heel. Blade needs recut and would be great in an 8 point cross cut. Blade has deep patina, but handle while filthy has only minor wear. Would clean to be a great looking saw. $85  
         
  K35 1940 Disston D23 is 26" long and 6 1/4" high. Saw is in overall great condition, just needs a good cleaning and refiled. Teeth are currently a 6 point rip, just needs jointed and filed. A nice saw. $85  
         
  K36 1950 era Disston D8 is 26" long and 6 3/4" high at heel. This saw only requires the slightest of cleaning and is ready to file. Currently an 8 point cross cut, this saw will be a great user. Don't turn up your nose at the late vintage, the steel in this saw measures 52.5C! $85  
         
  K37 1900 era Disston #12 measures 26" long and 6 3/4" high at heel. Currently a 7 point cross cut, this saw can be refiled as is with a little skill, or recut to the ppi of your choice. The blade has light surface rust and the handle has damage to the upper horn and moderate wear. Those who have had the pleasure to use a #12 will understand why it's on the premium pile. $85  
         
  K38 1950 era Disston "Great American Special" is essentially a spiffed up D23 with stained handle. This saw measures 26" long and 6 1/8" high at heel. Currently a 9 point, this saw needs recut due to poor filing. Would excel as a fine 11-12 point finish saw. Will clean nicely. $85  
         
  K39 1890 era Disston #76 Centennial is 26" long and 7 1/4" high at heel. Currently a 9 point cross cut, this saw is ready to file. Handle is nice with only a minor sliver off lower horn. Blade is dull, but will clean nicely. Etch is faint but will come out with careful cleaning. This a essentially a D8 saw with no let in handle, but is early and not at all common. $85  
         
  K40 This unmarked saw appears to be Atkins made and is from around 1900. This is an unusual saw and should be a challenge for even an experienced filer. It has a 28" long blade which is 7 5/8" high at heel. What makes it unusual is that it is a true combination saw, with a series of 3 teeth of crosscut profile and rip style teeth at the beginning and end of the series. 7 ppi cross cut teeth for the first few inches at heel and toe. A great project for someone handy with a file. $85  
         
  K41 1900 era Atkins combination saw which is very similar to the one above, only it is 26" long and 7" high at heel. This one is stamped "93" at the heel which stands for the 9 ppi cross cut teeth at heel and toe and the 3 point teeth in between. Another great project saw. $85  
         
  K42 1925 era Disston made "1925 Flyer" for an Illinois hardware company. 26" long and 5 3/4" high. Really in good condition with bold etch, clean blade and nice handle. Just needs a light cleaning. Currently an 8 point cross cut and is ready to file. A nice piece. $85  
         
  K43 Very early London pattern panel saw has split nuts and stamped blade complete with the "triple crown" indicative of saws made before 1850. 20" long with a blade 5 1/4" high at heel. This cute little saw has a tight handle and needs recut. I'd recommend a fine tooth rip like a 7 point for this little gem. Interesting and early. $85  
         
  K44 1920 era Disston made "Black Diamond Saw Co" saw is 26" long and 6 5/8" high at heel. Currently a 7 point cross cut, saw is ready to file. Saw is clean and just needs a little oil on the handle. Not much cleanup required on this one. $85  
         
  K45 1900 era Disston D8 is 26" long and 7 1/4" high at heel. Currently an 8 point, this saw is ready to file as is. Blade has deep patina and will take some sanding to get cleaned up but will be worth the effort for a full width saw like this. Handle dirty, but has full horns and light wear. A great project saw that will be worth the effort to get cleaned up. $85  
         
  K46 1890 era Disston #7 is 26" long and 7 1/4" high at heel. Teeth are currently 5 ppi rip and need recut. Blade has light rust which is easily scraped off and handle has piece missing off upper horn, but presents well. A nice full width early saw. $85  
         
  K47 1890 era Disston D8 panel saw is 22" long and 5 3/4" high at heel. Currently a 12 point cross cut, this saw is ready to file. Blade and handle are in great shape except for chip off the front of upper horn. A great little saw in great shape. $85  
         
  K48 1942 era Disston D8 is 26" long and 7" high at heel. Currently an 8 point cross cut, this saw is ready to file. Blade is lightly rusted but will clean easily. Handle is near pristine. Saw will show nicely once cleaned. $85  
         
  K49 1940 era D7 crosscut is 26" long and 6 3/8" high at heel. Currently an 8 point cross cut, this saw is ready to file after a quick jointing. Blade is nice and will clean well. Handle good with minor wear. A good one. $85
