Vintage Saw Filing Vises

Here you will find our selection of vintage saw filing vises. These were made in a myriad number of styles, shapes and sizes. In general, the most desirable ones have the longest jaws possible. Most, however, are about 9" long which is the minimum that you should consider. We list these as we run across them and they are getting very hard to find--in any condition.

Vises which contain most of their finish are a rare breed. Most are at least a little rusty. Since they were made of cast iron, they were japanned which often wore off with the use and abuse that they saw.

Even considering the restore/clean debate as it applies to old tools, one can hardly object to a repaint if that's what pleases the user on something

like this that is just intended to be utilitarian. Occasionally we get a vise in that has been repainted. This in no way harms the use of the vise, and in many cases was done for good reason. We will point this out in the description if we detect it. If you do decide to repaint your vise, make sure you use flat black paint, not gloss.

All the vises sold here are guaranteed to be without breaks and have jaws which close tightly to grip your saw while being filed. Our many years of filing experience ensures that if you buy one of these vises, it will be the last one that you need.

Since these vises are all cast iron, and are heavy, we ship all vises by Fedex ground fully insured. Additionally, a flat rate of $15 for shipping applies due to the weight and additional packing required. They are more fragile than you might think and we want to make sure that should an accident occur in transit, your item is protected from loss.

V1 Disston #1 saw vise, jaws 9 1/8" long and paint 75% This vise was top of the line when they were introduced. The ball attachment allows the vise jaws to be tilted at the angle of the fleam, so the filer need only file straight across when tuning up a crosscut. A great vise with early victorian wide flat letters in the casting. $225

V2 A nice compact vise which is unmarked except for a number "4". With jaws exactly 9" long, this vise retains about 50% of its paint. With a long arm to clamp the swivel and graphic victorian era turn screw, this vise is as visually appealing as it is functional. $150

V3 Disston #2 with jaws that are 9 1/2" long and 75% paint. A cousin to the vise above, except no ball type adjustment. 90% of the vise sold were of this type. A great, early traditional vise. $180

V4 Disston 3D with jaws 12 3/4" long and paint about 50%. This vise is truly top dog among vises. With jaws almost 13" long, most saws only need moved once when filing one side. This vise is massive. Very, very heavy castings and tight jaws ensure that there is no vibration while filing. This vise could use a coat of paint, and while I didn't clean it, there could be a weld at the base but it could be a casting mark. Completely serviceable and the best for those who are serious filers, or would like to be. This vise also retains the wing nuts that held the filing guide which was originally sold with this vise. While they are scarce, if you have one, you are in business. $275

V5 Sargent #104, 9 1/4" jaws with paint at 95% although apparently resprayed. A completely serviceable no frills vise. I like these vises with a screw for the jaw tension, it allows you to really get a good grip on the saw you are filing. A nice vise, ready to go. $125

Sold!

V6 A very massive ball type vise, although unmarked with 9 1/2" jaws and paint about 40%. This is one of the more industrial vises I've had in this type. castings are first rate and a little bit of flair is exhibited in the star type nut which clamps the ball. A first rate vise which will give many years of service. $200
